October 3rd was Noah's 25th birthday. In honor of this birthday we got and roasted ourselves a whole pig! We asked around town and finally figured out that the easiest pig supplier happened to live two doors up the street from us. We went up there, picked out our pig who happened to be oinking and running around at the time. The night before the party the neighbors brought over the butchered carcass in a washtub, we added some condimento, let marinate overnight. The next morning at 8am we took him in a wheelbarrow to the local gigantic clay oven and left him in their care for 8 hours. That Sunday also happened to be the local election here, so everyone was in a good mood for a party and Peruvians rarely turn down an offer of lechon (roasted pork). Our landlords came and confettied Noah and Awamaki volunteers brought delicious snacks and salads and seemed very happy. Luckily, I had decided to make sangria because Peruvians explained to me that when you eat pig you definitely need some vinito afterward to lighten up all that fat. Phew!
